Man Utd 'wanted Tottenham star' in summer

Manchester United made moves to sign Tottenham defender Cristian Romero - as did PSG and Real Madrid - but the north Londoners refused to enter into negotiations

Manchester United made enquires about signing Tottenham defender Cristian Romero - and may be ready to return next summer after being turned away.

The Premier League giants were on the lookout for defensive recruits over the summer and considered raiding their domestic rival for Romero, who has proved himself to be a top performer since moving to north London back in 2021 after impressing at Atalanta.

Tottenham paid well over £40million to land the Argentine, part of his country's World Cup winners in 2022. Several of Europe's heavyweights are keen to land Romero though with PSG and Real Madrid joining the Manchester outfit in making initial moves.

TYC Sports reported that there was major interest in the centre-half and, despite Tottenham managing to fend off potential suitors now, clubs are expected to return with fresh offers next summer, at which point Romero's contract will have entered its final two years.

The north London outfit view Romero as a key asset and refused to even enter discussions nor did they give a figure that they may have accepted for their defender. Ange Postecoglou's defensive line, when all fit, proved to be a solid unit in his first year.

The Australian coach hailed his defender after last season's north London derby defeat to Arsenal - suggesting more of his team-mates needed the characteristics he showed. He said: "Yeah, he was outstanding. He's a World Cup winner and I've just got to get some of what's in him into some of the others."

Tottenham have been able to resist offers for their top players in recent years. Harry Kane is the only star who they opted to cash in on with the striker keen on exploring a new challenge. Several of their other major names they've been able to retain.

Romero has become the half of the first choice pairing with Argentina, teaming up with current United star Lisandro Martinez. Figures at Old Trafford were looking to reunite the pair at international level following a year which saw them ship a concerning amount of goals.

Bolstering their defensive line became a priority in the summer for those on the red side of Manchester. Leny Yoro was signed for more than £50m from Lille, only to get injured in pre-season, whilst Matthijs de Ligt has once again teamed up with Ten Hag after leaving Bayern Munich.
