Uruguayan FA's appeal fails, Nunez and Bentancur's suspensions remain unchanged
According to the latest report from Uruguayan media outlet "El País," the Uruguayan Football Association's appeal regarding the suspensions of Darwin Núñez and Rodrigo Bentancur has failed, with the South American Football Confederation's appeals committee confirming the original verdict.
At the end of August, CONMEBOL announced sanctions against several players from the Uruguayan national team for their involvement in a conflict following the semi-final match against Colombia, where Colombian fans attacked the players' families in the stands. The players penalized include Núñez, Bentancur, Ronald Araújo, José Giménez, and Matías Oliveira, as well as official Marcelo García.
The Uruguayan Football Association appealed the penalties, but on Tuesday, CONMEBOL's appeals committee upheld the original ruling, with no reductions in the sanctions. The only aspect that could be appealed was the cases of Núñez and Bentancur, as the appeal sought at least a four-match suspension.
As a result, the penalties remain unchanged: Núñez is suspended for five matches and fined $20,000, while Bentancur is suspended for four matches and fined $16,000. Additionally, Giménez, Araújo, and Oliveira are each suspended for three matches and fined $12,000.
These five Uruguayan players have already missed two matches in the September World Cup qualifiers, and the last three players are expected to return for the match against Ecuador during the October international break. Meanwhile, Núñez and Bentancur will miss the next international break, with their expected returns in November: Bentancur may return for the home match against Colombia, while Núñez is expected to come back for the away match against Brazil.
The most severe penalty was imposed on Marcelo García, the president of the Uruguayan Football Association's youth committee, who has been banned from entering CONMEBOL match venues for the next six months.
